Whether you are sitting down to begin a poker tournament or cash game, the way you start out can have it’s effect upon the rest of that particular session. In terms of cash games, I find that if you start out well and pick up a couple of pots, you should resist any urge to walk away and count your profits.

I feel that I play better when things are going my way, and having more cash, and apparently luck, than the player next to you can be a negative influence on their play sometimes. In short, you have a better chance to make money when you have already made a good start, and conversely, if you are chasing losses and hurting from a bad beat or two, you are more likely to lose I feel.

If you can, it might be worth leaving a table after small losses and continuing when you are having successes.
In terms of tournaments we do not have the opportunity to walk away with what we have, and must keep going no matter what fortunes befall us.

I generally see a few flops cheaply when I can, and start working with whatever the cards bring me on the flop. You must be aware if you are seeing lots of cheap flops that there are often numerous players in a pot, so if you are going to get involved after you’ve hit, make sure you hit well. I do not always start out this way, but it can be profitable in building momentum and chips early on. Generally if I find the cards are not running too well for me when I am seeing lots of flops, I tighten up and start playing stronger hands.
