It is best to start with one of the simpler forms of poker in order to grasp the basics of poker hands. You will find games such as Five Card Draw and Texas Holdem share the same list of hand rankings, as many poker games do. The complexities are not in understanding this list of hand rankings, but often the way these poker hands are made. In different games, a player may be holding differing numbers of cards, have some community cards or no community cards, and might only be able to use certain numbers of cards from their hand.

Texas Holdem has two cards in each players hands, with five community cards. Players can use one, two, or none of their hole cards to form the best possible five card hand, whereas in Omaha, you must use two of your four hole cards no matter what.

Once you understand these basic principles of poker hands you can begin to grasp concepts such as reading what hands your opponent might have by their betting and the board cards. You may then understand concepts such as representing hands you do not have, in order to scare opponents out of pots. It is often best to learn one game first, and once you are completely comfortable with reading hands in any given situation, you will find it much easier to grasp somethng a little more complex such as Omaha hi/lo.
