The past history of poker has been both lengthy, and short, in it’s own ways. The origins of the game itself can be traced back hundreds of years, but until very recently, the game was played in secluded places, shunned by many decent everyday people. For this reason, we have only really seen famous poker players become known over the past 30 years or so, and with a huge rise in the number of famous names in the past 5-10 years.

The early heroes of poker came in the form of Johnny Moss and Doyle Brunson, both of whom won the WSOP main event more than once. The eighties saw Johnny Chan win the main event twice consecutively, and he made it to the last two players in the following year of 1989, only to be stopped by a very young Phil Hellmuth.
That same Phil Hellmuth currently holds the record for the most World Series of Poker bracelets with 11, and is a modern hero of the game to some.
To others, his berating of opponents at the tables would exclude him from being deemed a great champion of poker, but he has certainly made himself famous in the process. The growth of online poker has brought us a whole new generation of famous poker players, and it is interesting to see their progress when they move into the world of live play with the best players around. These famous poker players will often seem to have a charmed life with sponsorships and the like, but they do fill an important role in poker. The famous poker players create a public image for poker, helping it to be accepted as a clean and skilled game.
