Online poker sites have appeared in great numbers over the past decade or so, and as the poker boom finally slowed down, many of these smaller poker rooms have started to struggle. The fact is that there are will always be a strong demand for online poker but with several big name brands absorbing most of the players, this doesn’t necessarily mean there will be room for many different operators.

The reasons that the bigger online poker sites will continue to prosper are many. The unique nature of poker as a game and the fact it can be played socially in homes or pubs will always help to keep interest high, as will the ease with which players can learn the games. This never used to be the case and the arrival of online poker sites changed this very suddenly, helping to cause an explosion of interest across several continents.
Online poker will continue to be popular for decades to come and on the face of it, would seem to be burying real life casinos by taking all the players that might otherwise play there. This isn’t entirely the case though, because many of the players in the world today would never have started playing if not for the emergence of online poker sites.
The problem for real casinos though, is that when you don’t have thousands of players coming through the door each day, you can’t offer every game imaginable at whatever stakes a player wants, and you can’t provide them with the possibility of being able to play without leaving their house.
For this reason, online sites will probably remain by far the more popular poker playing venue.
